You Become What You Think: Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science

We all love quotes. In this post I’ll quote, in chronological order, wisdom from over 2000 years ago until today. Each quote, from the greatest thinkers, business owners, presidents and philosophers, tell us the same thing. Although this quote is almost 3000 years old, it is completely true. Modern science has found a function of the brain called the Reticular Activating System, or RAS. Our RAS is the part of the brain that lies deep within our subconscious. The function of this RAS is to partially filter out all the sensory information that comes into our brain.

When you go about your daily life, your RAS is taking in torrents of information that you are completely unaware of, filtering out what’s important for you. You’re in the bath, and you feel something crawling on your shoulder. The RAS switches your focus to that immediately and you jump. You did not choose to focus on that feeling, it happened on it’s own. When you realise it was just the tap dripping on you, you calm down again.

This is one way the RAS works. This function tells you when to eat, sleep, and tunes your attention to things that are important. This is why you can drown out an entire conversation, but as soon as your name is mentioned, your ears perk up. That’s your RAS functioning well.

Bring all the senses into your visualisation and your RAS will tune straight into your goals.
